Weird Weird West v1.1


Here we go, new version! Things are now pretty much fully settled, rules-wise (I hope and think) and I'm really happy with where the game is. I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I did playtesting it! (And writing the damned thing)

The main changes are:

  • Minor rule re-wording! Clarifying some bits, changing others. Nothing major.
  • Weird Ruinations! Each playbook now has a power they can invoke, at the cost of slowly turning into a monster themselves! I really wanted to emphasise both:
    • the "weird" aspect of the game a bit more, and this feels super thematic and appropriate to me.
    • the "Western", "everything has a cost", "victory at a price" tone, and I love the idea becoming a monster to beat the monsters.
  • The THINKER playbook has an (almost) entirely new Move list! I already thought the generic THINKER Moves were the weakest part of the game, and player feedback suggested the same. After some massaging of my brain, a bit of playtesting, some out of the box thinking, and reading and re-reading all the RPGs I own, I've come up with a list of Moves I actually really love. 
    • They're much more "planning" and "preparation" based, which feels really appropriate. As a sort of juxtaposition to the other classes, instead of giving you second-to-second abilities, the THINKER instead gives you narrative-warping long-term abilities. 
  • New Playbook designs (and knock on changes)! This is the biggest aesthetic change: I've completely re-made every playbook from scratch in some editing software. I'm super proud of them, and I think they work really well. The main changes are:
    • Dedicated Background and Appearance lists. Doing away with the backgrounds giving you clothes, and instead letting you simply choose what you look like (and we don't care about the rest).
    • Starting equipment list. Suggested by player feedback (thanks to Itch user benndak!), and an absolute no brainer really. Tells you what you start with, and invites you to pick some more.
    • Area for the new weird ruinations.
    • Lots of tiny changes designed to make character creation even easier (labels and such)
    • A splash of colour.
